How the Mazda3 Has Changed Over Time

The Mazda3 was rolled out in 2004 to replace the aging Protégé, and used as its base the Ford C1 platform-the same as the European Ford Escort. Styled as both a five-door hatchback and a four-door sedan, the 2004 Mazda3 was larger than previous Mazda subcompacts. Offering either a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder that produced 148 horsepower, or a 2.3-liter, four-cylinder that outputs 160 horsepower, they came with either a four-speed automatic transmission or a five-speed manual. The 2007 bumped up the power to a turbocharged 2.3-liter MZR that delivered 263 horsepower and paired it with a six-speed manual transmission. This model clocked in at a record 0-60 in 5.9 seconds, doing a quarter mile in 14.2 seconds while topping out at 100 mph.

The year 2010 saw the advent of the second generation Mazda3, in a somewhat wider and longer version, but still based on the Ford C1 platform. A 2.5L four-cylinder engine produced 167 hp.

The next major change came with the third generation that came off the assembly line in 2014. The KODO body design and the direct-injection SKYACTIV four-cylinder gas engine were just two of the upgrades of that year. The front grille was reshaped, the body was widened by 1.6 inches, and the wheelbase was lengthened by 2 inches. However, the car length overall was shortened 1.8 inches. Technology was showcased in its infotainment center that could read short e-mails, as well as Facebook and Twitter updates. New safety technology was introduced also.
